A lot of bloggers started their blogs with the hope they will make money from it. I won’t get into the fact that a lot of them didn’t have a plan, or have any vague idea on how they would make that money.
It boils down to “I will get at least 100 people to visit my blog every day and then I will sell them something via my affiliate links”. Yeah, you wish. It just doesn’t work like that.
Especially if your blog is in the “blogging and internet marketing niche”, which is so saturated that you simply have to have something special to make it.
But there is always one way you can make money from your blog, that isn’t affiliate marketing. You can always provide services to others and use your blog as a medium to present yourself to potential clients!
You don’t think you have something that someone would pay for? There is always something you can do that people need help with.
Here are some things of the top of my head that I have done for others, that you think anyone can do:
- create a Youtube channel,
- upload a video to Youtube,
- embed a video to a blog,
- install a plugin,
- add social sharing buttons to a blog.
Wow, that is simple, I hear you saying. Yes, it is, for someone that knows how to do it or has extra time on their hands.
But the thing is, not everyone knows how to do those things, or simply don”t have time to do it. There are people with much more on their plate than just running a blog.
They may be running a real brick and mortar business and blog for fun; they may have 4 young ‘uns on their hands and need to feed and clean them all; orthey may be too old to be in the mood to learn new things and it is easier for them to just pay someone to do it.
But I am coming to my point just now. What is that one thing that will bring the first clients to you?
You need to tell people you are for hire!
Don’t assume people know you can be hired, and don’t wait for people to approach you – take action instead. Here are some steps I went through in last couple of months.
- Put a “hire me” page on your blog or, even better, create a simple portfolio site where you will list your services, prices and show off your previous work.
- Promote it.
- Tell your blogging friends as well as real life friends that you are taking new clients.
- Give some of your services for free or dirt cheap to get the ball rolling and get the first testimonials.
- Ask your clients to recommend you to their friends.
I had the luck to have a mentor that helped me get this part of my business off the ground with some amazing tips and ideas – here are just some of them:
- To make sure you got it – tell people you need or want to work.
- Don’t be afraid to start with lower prices to get the first clients because once you do a good job, they will come back.
- To make sure you get the best recommendations, if you can, put some extra work in what ever you are doing for them.
- If they need a plugin installed and you see they have no security protection on their blog, suggest some good security plugins.
- If you are working based on hourly rate, do an extra 30 minutes, it won’t kill you.
Sometimes it is just cool to overdeliver, because you’ll probably make someone’s day. Make someone’s day, they’ll use you again.
How about you? Are you providing any services? How did you get your first clients?
