We’re Leaving Feedburner and Why You Should Consider Moving Your Blog Too

FeedBlitz — The All In One Solution for Email and Social Media Automation

For the last two years, we’ve used the Feedburner service on this blog for folks that are kind enough to subscribe.

It was the simplest and – at the time – most effective way for bloggers to offer subscription options. Then Google bought it, and it went downhill.

Subscriber numbers were all over the place; often whole subscriber services disappeared; and the support for issues turned into something pretty non-existent. Although, in fairness, that’s true of pretty much any Google product…

However, we – like many other bloggers using Feedburner – persevered, in the hope it’d finally work out. Then I read this recent blog post over at The Way of The Web, which suggested Google may be about to close Feedburner down. From that post:

But today two things have happened. The Google Adsense for Feeds Blog has announced it has closed;

‘After some consideration, we recognize that we’re just not generating enough content here to warrant your time, so we won’t be posting here any longer.’

Which is true, given the last prior post was in October, 2010.

But also the @Feedburner Twitter account is being closed from today as well. The Feedburner API was already deprecated and is due to close in October, 2012.

Now, while Google may keep Feedburner going, the signs aren’t good. So, time to move.

I’d looked at Feedblitz before as an alternative, but at the time it looked a little clunky as far as migrating feeds over. Let it be noted, however, that I am the world’s crappiest techy-type person, so that could have been down to me…

However, when I checked it out again earlier this week, it looked a lot smoother. Email subscription transfers for existing subscribers was pretty straightforward to do, and all new email subscribers should be going over to the new Feedblitz option.

RSS was even simpler – a straightforward feed redirect from Feedburner for the next 15 days, and then this blog should all be on the Feedblitz platform.

What I also like about Feedblitz are the social options – you can subscribe via a host of social networks too, so you’d get a Twitter mention once a post goes live, for example. There are also some pretty nifty analytics available, as well as newsletter options and more.

There is a cost involved, but that’s only for email subscriptions – if people subscribe to your blog by RSS feed, then that’s free for you to manage.

I don’t really do justice to the Feedblitz options here (especially the support from founder Phil Hollows) – so check them out for yourself and , if you’re currently on Feedburner, you might want to consider moving your own blog over.

We’re switching too at Convince & Convert. Next week is turn-on date. And Phil Hollows is THE MAN. World-class support. Go Feedblitz!

Agreed, mate – I switched over my own blog last week and it was so painless. And, I also found out that Feedburner had been leaving out over 8,000 subscribers – sheesh!

Chatted with Phil on Skype earlier this week, great guy – then again, what do you expect from a Brit? ;-)

Good luck with the move, I’m sure it’ll be seamless!

Can’t wait, Jay! And thank you – you’re too kind :)

Hey Danny, been thinking about this quite a bit. And figure I’m going to have to do something. So my big question, which I believe you have already answered, is any subscriber that has not subscribed via email, will need to resubscribe? For some of us who have a lot of “reader” subscribers, that’s kind of scary.

    • http://dannybrown.me/ Danny Brown

      Hi mate,

If your readers use RSS, there’s a redirect option to move Feedburner
subs over easily (you may even find some that Feedburner omitted – 8,000
extra subs in my case over at dannybrown.me!). This provides a redirect
message to existing RSS subscribers to update their feeds (or let the
      redirect do its work).

Additionally, highlighting in a post, tweet, status update, etc, is highly recommended.

      Hope that helps!

        Very cool, thanks!

    • phollows

Email subscribers do NOT have to resubscribe :) For RSS subscribers it depends on your current setup. We have a free migration guide available for download at http://www.feedblitz.com/the-feedburner-migration-guide/

I’m at war w/Youtube or as I like to call it youboob! I’d been making brief vids based on tongue& cheeky poems from my bk, MEN AT WORK…the first one had already been labeled ‘age restricted’ and suddenly (AG – after google) it was removed, no reason why, now I can’t get into my channel until I acknowledge what they did & accept it. I refuse…so I want to thank you for this new place as I’ve got to begin to blog now that my new book is finally, well almost, done.
    cheers,

I’ve been at the same point. Feedburner just isn’t what it used to be. Looking at keeping feeds local, using jetback for post subscriptions, and mint for feed tracking. Anyone else tried this setup?

    • http://dannybrown.me/ Danny Brown

Seems a bit of a workaround when there are other solutions that aggregate it?

I have been considering a switch too, but I have also been thinking of if Feedblitz could replace AWeber for sending out newsletters?

I’ve looked at FeedBlitz a while ago, Danny; don’t really remember why I didn’t like them.

Never really had any trouble with Feedburner; but then again, it might be because I don’t even pay attention to my poor RSS subscribers – they are on their own. lol

Thanks for putting out the post Danny.
    Something else to think about!

I left feedburner a couple of years ago (iirc) when it was having so many problems keeping correct numbers of subscribers. Moved to feedblitz back then and have been happy ever since.

I registered with feedblitz and the thing I don’t like about their service is the fact that their is no “free” version. Especially when Feedburner is free no matter the subscriber count. When reading the FAQ’s it was to my understanding that I had the option to use the free version with ads, but when I registered I’m asked for my credit card info for a free trial period with which I will be later charged said amount based on my subscriber count. I wouldn’t mind if their was a set amount for different services such as free version with ads, and maybe a set amount for without ads, but the pricing goes up and up based on the more subscribers you have which has scared me off completely!

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Hi Samara,

Yep, the email subscription option can get costly if you have a lot of subscribers. However, that’s in line with any email list option. The RSS subscriber option is always free, regardless of how many subscriptions there are.

Great heads-up, thank you :) It’s about time someone disrupted that space, anyway! Kudos to FeedBlitz.

Somehow forgot to comment and thank you for the mention. By the looks of things it was simply Google’s continual failure to communicate changes well and a rationalisation of their blogs.
But the lack of interest in Feedburner definitely means it won’t get better, even if it continues to run, which still makes it worthwhile finding a better alternative.

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Hey there Dan,

No worries, mate, and thanks for writing that article. Feedburner has always been kinda wonky, but it’s gone to heck on steroids since Google took over. Shame.

If you’re going to move your feeds, do it because you found something better and feedburner just isn’t meeting your needs.

Lets not create unnecessary fear about Google feedburner closing down – And even if they do, You and i know they will give a Long grace period and recommend other alternatives for publishers to move.

This post makes it sound like we’ll wake up tomorrow and find all our subscribers GONE!!! lol

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

They shut down the official Japanese Feedburner accounts without warning. People are already seeing their posts not appearing in RSS updates, or automated scheduling. I think it’s safe to say Google couldn’t care less about due warning – heck, they haven’t cared about Feedburner since they bought it, so why start now..?

  • TastefullyJulie

@Soki Briggs   I hate to break it to you but my feedburner subscriber list disappeared. It’s currently showing that I have 0 subscribers :(

Just switched but not sure if I did everything ok, one of the feeds is showing weird stuff. But I am happy I did, I don’t like depending on unreliable services like Google’s are. I will stay with Aweber though, just love it :)

  • leighhudson1

@Soki Briggs Um, well, that happened to me Today. This morning I had close to 2,000 subscribers and now I have 25.
