5 Guaranteed Ways to Get Your Blog Noticed More

Get your blog noticed

Ask pretty much any blogger what the biggest challenge was when they first started blogging, and getting their blog noticed will probably be one of the most popular answers.

While we all want to be a Problogger or Copyblogger from the off, it’s probably not going to happen (unless you’re friends with either Darren Rowse or Brian Clark and they pimp the hell out of you!).

And with millions of bloggers giving up because they’re not getting the traffic to make it worthwhile for them, you can see why getting your blog noticed carries such importance.

While there’s no doubt a lot of luck and being in the right place at the right time can help, there are also some ways that are pretty much guaranteed to get your blog noticed.

Here are just five of them.

Learn SEO

One of the most tried and tested forms of any website or blog being found is search engine optimization, or SEO. As the name suggests, this is making sure your blog is as optimized as possible when it comes to being found via searches on the likes of Google, Bing, Yahoo and more.

When you start blogging, usually you’re going to want to be known for a certain niche or topic, and be found by people searching for that topic. This is where knowing SEO and its benefits come in.

As an example, if you go to Google.com and search for “best blogging tips”, For Bloggers By Bloggers is currently at #3 on the first page for this term, and #2 on the first page of Bing (at the time of writing). Since most web surfers go by results from the first page of search, and the results that are higher up that page, it’s easy to see that we get a lot of traffic for this term, which we’re really happy about.

If you’re unsure how SEO works, or how to best use it for your blog, check out this great tip sheet from SEOmoz, the leading source for SEO best practices.

Write Great Headlines

While SEO is a great method for getting more visibility to your blog, many bloggers don’t like having to write with search engines in mind – they (often correctly) feel that it takes away the flow of their post, and turns it into a keyword-stuffed ramble instead.

So another great way to grab traffic to your blog is to write great headlines.

Great blog headlines

Take a look at some of the most popular blogs, and you’ll see that (generally), the headline has a great attraction factor built in.

Take Copyblogger, for example, with titles like 125 Tips for Building an Irresistible Brand and 8 Incredibly Simple Ways to Get More People to Read Your Content.

Though I’m biased, I also think we have some great headlines here, with 10 Reasons No One Notices Your Blog Comment and How to Blog Like an A-Lister being just a couple of examples.

Since one of the first things a visitor sees when visiting your blog is your post title, you need to make it grab their attention. So think of ways on how to do this:

  • Read your title aloud and see if you can say it in one breath. If you can’t, it’s too long.
  • Think of what people would search for in search engines, and build your title around that.
  • Think how it’ll look when being shared on social networks – will the title grab interest right away?
  • Use powerful wording. No-one’s going to get excited about “Another Blog Post About Blogging”; but if you change it to “Why Your Blog is a Secret Goldmine”, it’s going to pique interest more.

You have anywhere between three and fifteen seconds to grab a visitor to your blog. Make sure your headline invites them in.

Make It Easy to Share

You have a blog. You write kick-ass content day in, day out. You make people think when they read, and they want to tell the world about your blog and how great it is. So they go to share with their social networks, by using the social sharing buttons on your post.

Except you don’t have any, or you have very limited options (usually just limiting those to Facebook and Twitter).

Why? Why would you erect any barriers to letting people share your post you’ve worked so hard on? That’s like getting a date with Jessica Alba and then spending the evening talking about your Jessica Biel crush.

So make it easy for people to distribute your blog post. There are a ton of options available, regardless of what blogging platform you use (Blogger, WordPress, Typepad or others).

Some you may have to hard code into your blog (Google how to do this for your chosen platform), some you can add as plug-ins. On For Bloggers By Bloggers, we use the Digg Digg plug-in for the sharing options at the top of each post, and Sociable Pro at the end. There are many more – see what some of your favourite bloggers are using, and ask what it is if you like it.

But whatever you do, at least make sure you have a decent social sharing option!

Comment More Than You Blog

This might sound like the last thing you want to be doing when you’re trying to get your blog noticed. After all, isn’t the whole idea meant to be growing your blog, as opposed to growing the comments of someone else’s blog?

Well, yes it is – but there’s method to this madness. Because as you comment more on blogs, the more people will start to notice you. The more people notice you, the more they’ll become interested in what you have to say. The more they become interested in what you have to say… well, all they need to is click on your URL and come to your blog.

Better still, if that blogger is using the CommentLuv system, you can choose to leave a link to your most recent blog post. This is a great way for others to find out about you – and more reason to write great headlines!

If you’re not too sure about how often you should comment, or you just want some tips, check out this great post by Judy Dunn on how to make your blog comments great.

Tell People About It!

Seems like a no-brainer, huh? You have a blog, you’re publishing left, right and centre (or will be) and world domination is in your grasp. Except it won’t be if no-one knows about your blog in the first place.

So tell people about it!

  • Register your blog on blog communities (especially ones in your niche). Sites like Scribnia, BlogEngage, ComLuv and more are great starting points.
  • Update your email signature to have your blog URL on there. If your email service supports it, use something like WiseStamp to give you a cool email signature that allows you to share your latest post automatically (via the RSS feed).
  • Update your social networks to share your URL, and send a message to your friends to ask them to check it out.
  • Put it on your business cards if you use them.
  • Ask your friends and social network connections if they can spread the news about your blog.

These are just five ways to help you get your blog noticed, either as a new blogger or someone who’s been blogging a while. While (technically) nothing is ever guaranteed, by following these five tips you should start to see a difference in your traffic.

How about you – what approaches have you found useful? Do you use any of the ones here, and how have they worked for you?

  • http://www.metromarketingblog.com Jared Holland

This is one of the best general, straight forward articles about getting started blogging. I really enjoyed the read.

    Thanks!

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Hi there Jared,

Thanks, mate, really appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoyed the post!

  • http://www.barancle.com Tim Baran

Very useful post, Danny. And timely for me since just yesterday I wrote a quick post about one of my pet peeves – hyperbolic titles that mislead. Love your wording – write great, even attention grabbing headlines. This can be done without misleading. Agree, learning SEO is a must, though we can do that organically over a period of time, no? I think that way, we have a better understanding of the medium and audience — which leads me to traffic stats. Niche blogs will never gain anywhere close to the kind of traffic that the top blogs attract and we have to recognize that and learn to be okay with it – if the limited audience is the one we’re seeking. Thanks for the opportunity to rant :-)

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

For sure, Tim – organic is always the best way to grow, as that (usually) means longevity – something we should all be aspiring to. “Traditional SEO” is a definite bonus to know to get you on the way (and keep on top of the search engines), but organic is a much stronger beast.

Completely agree with niche blogs and traffic, though I think that can depend on the niche too, and how you’re defining it. Look at Copyblogger – that fills a niche for better copywriting on blogs, and gets a huge source of traffic.

But yes, something like Moon Boot Styles for Gardeners is probably going to get much less. But then the ratio angle comes into play – how much of the audience for that niche is your blog attracting? If you’re getting 80% of that audience, and Copyblogger is only getting 50% of their audience, your blog is more successful (even if not from a hard numbers traffic angle).

Cheers, sir, popping over to read your post soon! :)

  • http://joeystrawn.com Joey Strawn

I love this list of tips Danny. When I started out (and even some to this day) I struggled mainly with the SEO factors of getting things out there. I’m a writer and had to research and teach myself the ins and outs of SEO to help get my stuff out there.

The other one I struggle with most often is commenting more than I post. I’ve really made an effort so far in 2011 to ramp that up because commenting and engaging are the fastest and most rewarding ways to increase the number of people that recognize your name.

    Awesome stuff!

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Hey there Joey,

Know what you mean, mate. I was bootstrapping and had to sit down for weeks learning the intricacies of SEO, on and off page benefits, metas, blah blah :)

But I know it’s beneficial and definitely helps, so it seemed less of a chore. And (thankfully), I know my way around SEO enough now that it helps with new projects, clients, etc.

And I’m surprised by your blog commenting “admission” – thought you would be one of the most active. I’ll have to re-evaluate your standing, Strawn… ;-)

  • http://www.thetop10blog.com/ Tony Hastings

I must admit I never realised when I started blogging what a fascinating and challenging world I had stepped into, so much to learn!

Thanks Danny for breaking things down so simply, sometimes it’s difficult to see the wood from the trees and definitely too easy to over complicate things. My own approach has been to try to absorb knowledge from the experts a bit at a time and apply what is going to work for me. I have found though that you do need to be prepared to admit to yourself if something isn’t working out and make changes.

That applies to me at the moment with sharing , I seem to have been fiddling around for ages with different combinations, I have just started with Digg Digg, really like it but where to place the buttons to look right and be effective, at the start, at the end, at the side? I can feel a bit more fiddling coming on now I have read this!

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to meet my resolution to comment more this year, I just hope Judy approves after her post yesterday.

    Thanks

    Tony

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

That’s the great thing about blogging for sure, Tony – the fact that your blog is never really finished. You can fiddle with design; you can look at social sharing options; you can look at how you lay out the navigation, and much more.

Even better? Every one is different, so what works for me or anyone else might not be your cup of tea, and that’s where your own take comes in.

And that’s all that matters at the end of the day. :)

PS – If Judy gives you a hard time, just let me know. ;-)

      • http://www.catseyewriter.com Judy Dunn

Ha! To Tony, I just say, commenting more in the new year is a good thing. Always enjoy yours.

And, yes, Danny keeps me in line, so no need to worry. : )

        • http://www.thetop10blog.com/ Tony Hastings

Thanks to both of you for keeping me entertained and informed, great start to the New Year :-)

  • http://www.thecitizenrosebud.com Bella Q

What a great no-nonsense primer for bloggers to get down to the business of getting noticed. You’ve cut through the crap and wrote down the essentials, and I feel like I want to send this link to all my blogging buddies. But luckily, you have lots of options to share (and you’re right, there are more options than Twitter and FB) so I am, very easily without leaving this post.

I’m pretty good at headlines, and commenting but the nitty-gritty SEO thingy-mah-ings, not so good. I feel intimidated and have not actively learned how to speak the language of the search engines. Hopefully you’ve got a post in your archive covering the topic, which I can read, and then send you a big fat thankyou note.

Great blog you’ve got here by the way. Some “blog tip” blogs I find annoying because they don’t seem to share anything but the obvious, but your posts have been on target, and succintly said. Bravo, amigo.

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Hi there Bella,

First off, thank you for your really kind words, much appreciated. I know what you mean about “blog tip blogs”, and one of the things I wanted to make sure when setting this one up was that it wasn’t just the usual generic tips. That played a big part in the authors I invited onto the core team – they very rarely (if ever) go for the generic – glad you agree and enjoyed, and we’ll do our best to keep it that way. :)

There isn’t any specific SEO post in the archives as of yet, but it’s something that will be getting covered very soon, either by myself or a guest poster with great SEO credentials. Stay tuned! :)

  • http://www.plrarticlesnow.com Murlu@PLR Articles

The headline is overlooked far too often with so many bloggers; all that great work people put into post to have it forgotten because it didn’t catch peoples attention. I always try to take at least 20 – 30 shots at generating a post title on my main blog so that it works well with social media – helps it get shared, creates a bit of controversy and generally goes over well.

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

Agreed, Murlu. I have to admit, I don’t worry about it too much on my own blog, as I don’t think the style would fit headlines that are designed to grab attention. However, on here (and on other blogs that are more targeted), having a strong headline is definitely on my mind when writing a post.

      Cheers, mate!

  • http://justicewordlaw.com Justice Wordlaw IV

Danny this was a really great post that you presented here. The point that you made with Headlines and to say your title out loud is something that I have never done before. But, now reading that post I could understand how that could be a very good idea to do so.

I know SEO has always been the struggle for myself and trusting in a company or service that could produce the service that I would like. I have heard a lot of fluff about seo services and how sometimes it takes years to rank within specific keywords that you want.

I really enjoyed reading this post this evening. Great Job

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Thanks Justice,

With regards SEO, yeah, there’s definitely a lot of misunderstanding about ranking and owning keywords (and whether they’re even needed anymore). I’ll be doing a post on SEO soon, but in the meantime, “waiting years to rank” is definitely a myth. :)

  • http://www.thesaleslion.com Marcus Sheridan- The Sales Lion

Great list here Danny. One that caught my attention was ‘commenting’. It took me about 8 months of blogging to realize that if I was ever going to make a big name for myself, I needed to start to get much more interested in other people than I was. My network sucked. And because of this, a didn’t get lots of comments. Once I embraced building relationships and contributing to other people and their sites, everything started to change, and it happened rather quickly. Now almost all my articles get at least 30 comments, and boy does that help with the satisfaction of writing and knowing that you don’t have a billboard in the desert.

And about Wisestamp, very much agree with you on that too. I’ve been using it now for about 5 months and it’s great, especially the RSS option and the ability to have multiple sigs depending on the email.

    Much thanks-

    Marcus

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Hey there Marcus,

Couldn’t agree more, mate – it’s one of the reasons I really like the CommentLuv system, while I’ll use tools like Technorati, Google Blog Alerts and others to find new ones based on topics. Then there’s always social sharing to point me to new finds. :)

Funny how talking somewhere else can get people talking at your place, huh? ;-)

  • http://bizhax.com Keith

When I first started a blog about blogging (hotblogtips dot com) last year, I had already been commenting heavily, when I bought the site (which I am selling now to rebrand) I immediately had traffic and commentors. I would say other than writing content that is awesome and shareable, commenting may be one of those factors that help keep you going because it brings enough people around to keep you excited about what you are doing.

On a side note, I discovered my site at #7 (hotblogtips) for “best bogging tips” without the quotations, which I didn’t even know I ranked for :-) maybe that will help me sell it LOL…..

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

That’s a great domain, Keith – any particular reason you’re selling it? Is it to concentrate on BizHax.com instead?

But yeah, commenting on other blogs (as well as replying to your own commenters) is definitely a key part to blogging, at least if you really want to grow the community around you.

And nice job on the search placing. :)

  • http://www.lectrify.ca Laura Williams

Hey Danny – thanks for another fantastic post. This blog is essential reading for me and I look forward to every issue. (THANK YOU!) Not only is the content relevant, the topics mirror my current blog angst. Are you reading my mind??

My blog, Lectrify, is pretty new (July 2010) and I am really struggling to get it noticed. I have vowed to apply all the advice you’ve stated in this and other recent posts about promoting it better, and will hope it will make a difference.

I do have one question that I haven’t seen covered anywhere yet: how do you know if you are writing to too MUCH of a niche or too LITTLE of a niche? My blog deals with things that “electrify” our lives and make us think and feel. For my purposes, that’s primarily entertainment-based (books, movies, music) plus people & events. Someone suggested that I should focus ONLY on music or ONLY on movies. But do I HAVE to? All of these topics fit my personal criteria of things that inspire or provoke. But am I doing my blog a disservice by only interesting some of the people some of the time?

    Thanks for everything, Danny.

    Laura

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Hi there Laura,

ALWAYS a pleasure to see you in my comments, keep ‘em coming :)

There’s definitely benefits to having a single niche blog, but then there are also benefits to having a multiple topic blog. One of the “problems” you might be finding is that the entertainment blog scene is already a heavily-subscribed one. It usually takes a while for a new blog to get established anyways, but launching one in a heavily-populated medium just adds to the problem.

However… that isn’t meant to discourage you. Instead, some of the things you could try (on top of the points raised here) include:

      - If you’re in it for the long-term (which, knowing you, I would say you are), make the switch from the free WordPress system to a self-hosted one (people do take them more seriously, as it shows commitment on your part).

      - Think of the topics you’re writing about. What would be the keywords they’d look for? Is there a topic you can focus more on while still covering the rest? Then buy a domain with that in mind. As an example, our site is called For Bloggers By Bloggers, but no-one searches for that. So our domain is bestbloggingtipsonline.com and that’s something we keep in mind when optimizing the site, as well as writing posts. You can still call your blog Lectrify, but go for a different domain and URL :)

      - Join groups on Facebook, or LinkedIn (there are some great blogging ones on LinkedIn) and start introducing yourself, and answering questions (or asking them). I’ve found some great blogs and bloggers via LinkedIn groups, and the best ones will help you grow.

Hope that helps, and let me know how you get on (and I’d be happy to help re. self-hosting questions and set-up) :)

      • http://www.lectrify.ca Laura Williams

Thanks, Danny. Great advice (as always).

        Laura

  • http://live-your-love.com/ Brankica

I have never heard of this tip:
“Read your title aloud and see if you can say it in one breath. If you can’t, it’s too long.” but I love it.

In general you list some basic rules that people seem to forget. Beginners start a blog and straight away they want to be social media gurus with most shared posts or get discouraged when they don’t get much traffic. But they skip the basics that are the foundation for a good blog.

I will have to bookmark this one for myself and read it again in a few weeks to see if I improved anything after the first reading ;)

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

The way I look at title length is that if you need an extra breath to say it, then imagine how it must read. If I need to double-check a title because of length, and make sure I got its meaning, then I’ve potentially lost a reader’s full interest in the post from the off. And I really don’t want that :)

  • http://thebluepenlady.blogspot.com/ Blue Pen Lady

    Dear Mr.Brown,

Yesterday, I opened up a blog and I just published my first post I have ever made on a blog in the Google Blogger. I feel like it’s weird that I am commenting right now since this blog post was made all the way in January, but if you could, can you please answer a few questions that I have.

    1. I searched my blog on google blogs but I didn’t find my blog, which was quite strange. Thus, I thought about submitting my URL of my blog to google, but I have been questioning whether it has any costs to have my URL on google. Does it have a cost?

    2. On my blog, I do not share my name or anything personal about myself other than my writing habits and different experiences. I am known as the Blue Pen Lady and I want to keep my anonymity present. I don’t even want my friends to know that it is my blog because it can ruin my anonymity. Is there any other way I can promote my blog on social networks, but not blow my cover?

Overall, your blog has helped me tremendously and I am looking forward to reading your other blog posts. Thank you very much.

    Sincerely,
    BP Lady

    • http://dannybrown.me Danny Brown

      Hi there BPL,

First, congratulations on your first post – here’s to many more! :)

Submitting your blog to Google is free, and you can do it here:

      http://blogsearch.google.com/ping

It doesn’t usually appear immediately, so keep checking back to see when it’s live.

With regards anonymity, you could set up a private email account that has nothing to do with you, your name, anything. This will then let you set up a Twitter account, and you could probably use it to set up an “anonymous” Facebook account if you wanted to share there too. Just make sure you’re not breaking any Terms of Service by having two personal accounts.

      Hope that helps! :)

Great to hear, mate, and really glad the tips are helping. I like the way you use personal examples in your posts, and the images are great (especially your wife and the Horse Whisperer escapade!).

  • wordfromsteph

Thanks so much for this advice! This is one of the most helpful “getting started” posts I’ve come across. I’ve just started my blog, http://wordfromsteph.blogspot.com and have got the content and editorial calendar essentially mapped out for the first few months…but figuring out where and how to promote it is now the tricky part!

  • http://danger-k.tumblr.com Dan Stephenson

thanks alot for the top tips.

I was wondering if i’d be better off keeping my blog on tumblr which I do like because of its easy interface and appearance options or taking on my own website to see if that helps traffic in my direction.

Im not desperate for attention just a few people who have read my blog seemed to have enjoyed it.

    cheers mate.

    Hi
Danny, any advice for someone who is completely technologically challenged. I started my blog recently…its a humourous kind of “how not to date”

The other blogs i’ve seen look so sophisticated…I really need a dummies guide and wondered what the deal is with images and copyright etc.

Thanks for the tips above….think even i could do something with them.

    Thanks,
    Marcelle

Thanks for the helpful tips, Danny. We hope to implement them in our new blog, http://www.dealgumshoe.com! Dealgumshoe.com was created to help people take advantage of daily practical deals and to give advice on how to save regularly. Sometimes people don’t partake in deals because they seem ‘too good to be true’ but we’re here to act as a sounding board and to test deals so people are more comfortable saving their dough! We hope you check it out, learn something new and find a great deal!

Good stuff Danny.  I especially like the midget headline!  As a budding consultant, I am working to tie in my LLC, blog, and other social media outlets.  Getting traction is a bit slow, but as an A type, nothing can be fast enough.  Thanks for the direction.
