3 Ways To Indulge Your Creativity As A Blogger

from Dictionary.com

Today’s post is a bit different. If you search our friend Google for the keyword “creativity” you are sure to find several items like: 18 Ways To Unleash Your Creativity or 10 Steps To Boost your Creativity or even 475 Ways To Unlock Your Creativity.

All good reads I’m sure. Don’t get me wrong, we all need to unleash, boost and unlock our creativity, but I want to focus today’s post on a different idea.

I want you to learn to INDULGE your creativity.

Here’s my first presupposition: All created things are inherently creative.

Yep – I take it for granted that you and I are creative by nature. Somewhere within each of us is the desire and ability to create something from nothing.

Here’s my second presupposition: Bloggers are some of the most creative people I know. I have (as I’m sure you have) been blown away by many of the things I see bloggers create. We are an amazing community.

So – with this in mind, let’s take a look at three ways we can indulge our creativity as bloggers.

We Can Indulge Our Intuition

I have written about intuition before, but here’s what I want you to remember – it’s okay to yield to your intuition when sitting down to write a blog post. Some of the best blog posts come from the heart as well as the head. When both work together – now that’s creativity!

We Can Indulge Our Senses

Did you ever get a blog post idea from an image, picture, photo, piece of art? Here is a place where food and beverage bloggers have the rest of us. They are naturally in touch with their sense of smell and taste as they create.

Some of the best blog posts come from art blogs. Why? because they indulge their sense of sight in their writings.

We Can Indulge Our Community

I realize more each day how much i depend upon other bloggers for sparks of creativity. The community of which we are all a part is teeming ideas. We should find ways to tap into this community as often as possible.

Here’s a simple idea for indulging the community: Guest Posting. Reach out to the community and participate. Invite the creativity of others to your blog. I do it on a regular basis at my blog.  I believe you should as well.

As I’ve already said, bloggers are some of the best, brightest and most creative people out there. I believe the way we consume information in today’s society has been transformed by the creativity of the blogging community.

Case in point – all the major newspapers of the world now have their own blog.

Whether we are The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, a business blog, a marketing blog, a technology blog or a personal blog – it’s time for us all to indulge our creativity.

Your turn. In what ways our you indulging your creativity as a blogger? How do you view creativity? How does your creativity change the way you work, live, write?

I love to read and learn from your comments. Please continue the conversation below.

    I’m all for indulging. LOL
What a great take on creativity – as you say, not the usual 10 ways to unleash your creativity.

“I realize more each day how much i depend upon other bloggers for sparks of creativity.” – so true Frank.
The more you blog the more you realise how true that is.
My small indulgence is the banter and interaction I have with my commenters.

    Super little post.

    Thanks Keith!

I am always enriched and happier through that banter – we are lucky ducks to have that in our life and business!

    G’Day Frank,
I’m all for indulgence. But I’ve never been quite sure what people are talking about when they use words such as “creativity,” and ” innovation.”

I do know one man who is genuinely “creative.” He says that “creativity is merely inventive plagiarism.” The way I see it, inspiration is every where. You’ve just gotta keep your eyes open and your mind ready.

Hope that helps. Make sure you have fun

    Regards

    Leon

    Hi Leon,

I love the “keep your eyes open and your mind ready” and the inspiration is all around – so very true

In my mind, what you do after inspiration hits – that’s creativity.

Thanks for stopping by! You can make a safe bet that I’m having fun :)

A good alternative to the “unleash your creativity style posts” :)
Perhaps bloggers are too obsessed with replicating what works than to be truly creative? I certainly see that in a lot of the mid range blogs or is replicating what works the way to channel through the noise and find what works for your blog?

My tip for keeping creative is to write down an idea for something original as soon as you have the thought. Even if it is just scribbled down on a scrap of paper it will serve as a useful reimnder later.

    • http://frankdickinson.me Frank Dickinson

      Perfect tip Bob!

I keep a scrap piece of paper here on my desk for that very reason.

I hate it when i lose a great inspiration!

The way I keep my creative juices flowing is looking up the word associated with my niche. I look in encyclopedias, dictionaries, Thesauruses. I’m amazed at what I find to write about.

      Another perfect tip!

I’m writing this one down Glynis – much appreciated!

Hi Frank, I have never really considered myself to be a ‘creative’ person in the traditional way not being able to play a musical instrument or come up with a reasonably recognisable drawing of anything. I suppose I have always had a talent in putting down words on paper to make some sense but not in a ‘writing a story’ kind of way.

I have however been able to create something that is all my own work and I hope is worthwhile since I started to blog. I agree wholeheartedly with your 3 ways to be creative and I would only add one more – dare to be brave and prepared to take some risks. Nothing new is likely to be created if we are not able to do that.

Thanks for another interesting post Frank.

    Tony

Tony – I LOVE the creativity of your blog. A creative looking for other creatives (with you top 10 Twitter People posts) is a beautiful thing.

“dare to be brave” ->this I love as well. Being creative is all about risk taking. It’s about sticking your neck out and saying i have something to contribute to this world. It does take a brave person indeed!

Thanks Tony for the insight – you are appreciated!
