4 Blogging Concentration Killers and How to Fix Them

4 Blogging Concentration killers and How to Fix Them

Struggling to get that blog post written? How about trying to use your time wisely and writing all of your posts for the week at one sitting? (that requires HUGE concentration!)

What about that guest post you promised your fellow blogger?

Trying to: Redesign your blog site. Engage your readers in the comment section? Visit other blogs? Collaborate on a blog project. Record a podcast.

These are just some of the things that we do as bloggers. All of them require concentration in order to produce our best.

The problem as I see it: We live in a world of concentration killers. Nasty little invaders of our ability to focus and get the work done. Little buggers.

Here are 4 blogging concentration killers and how to fix them.

Killer #1: Social Media

I love social media – it’s what I do and a passion. But it is my #1 concentration killer related to my blogging work.  Social media makes it easy to connect with friends and disconnect from blogging. Every tweet, status update or stumble steals away your train of thought,  forcing you to backtrack when you resume your work. Love it or hate it – it’s a concentration killer.

How to fix it:

Avoid logging in to social media sites while you’re blogging. Better yet – write without internet access. Yeah I know, I’ve lost my mind. So I say to you this – try it and see if you (and me) can do it!

Killer #2: Email Creeping

Do you creep your email every hour? No Dickinson, I creep it every 5 minutes when I have my notification minder set :) . We stay connected to our work through email. That’s a given. The problem arises when we also let ourselves believe that if we do not check, reply and file every new hit to our Inbox instantaneously our world will stop turning. What if I miss an email that turns into money?

How to fix it:

Instead of checking email continuously, how about setting aside specific times before or after our blogging endeavors? If you can wait, I would suggest after. If you can’t – get though the emails first and then shut your client down. Turn it off. Nix the notifications. Don’t let it kill your concentration.

Killer #3: Your Cell Phone

Emails go “ping”, cell phones go “briiinnnng”. Boom! – concentration zapped.  Taking a call not only costs you the time you spend talking – it can also cut off your momentum on the task at hand.

How to fix it:

Short and sweet: Shut your phone off and check your voicemails when you are finished writing. Harsh maybe – again, try it!

Killer #4: Multitasking

People rave and brag about their ability to multitask. It’s like a rite of passage in the online world. Truth of the matter, M.I.T researchers say you lose time when you try to multitask. If you are blogging for dollars – time is money my friends.

How to fix it:

Devote your attention and focus to one post or project at a time. Work your schedule so they follow one after another for a set amount of time. Scratch one of your list before starting another. Then take a break. I have found this works better than trying to work on three things at the same time.

Blogging ain’t easy. We need all the help and concentration we can get. Try a few of these tips.

Your Turn:

What concentration killers haunt you the most? How do you overcome them? What’s your secret sauce?

Absolutely and totally social media is the number one killer. Takes so much time and effort to get updated.

I think the bit about killing notifications, badges, dings and buzzers bares repeating. The only ones I allow on my phone and desktop are tasks that are due that day. Everything else has to be manually gotten or it will always automatically suck my attention away from what I actually want to do.

MSchechter Perfect tip to beat the notification concentration killer.

I have killed the email notification from my email client - I rarely use my cell phone to start with - but I can get caught up in a google chat or skype conversation with the best of them.

Learning how to put the ixnay on those is my biggest challenge.

FrankDickinson I've never much gotten into chat and only have a few people who I use it with on a daily basis. It slows things down as I count on email, but I have a feeling that it keeps me sane.

Checking emails is one of the deadliest killers. And for some bloggers, checking on adsense earnings or google analytics is a bad habit; especially for the newbies.

Jane | Problogging Success ahh - two good additions to the concentration killer's list!

Thanks Jane and have yourself a wonderful week.

I thin the cell phone has to be the big killer because I get off one app then I hop right onto another then I get off of that one and start emailing then I hop off of that one and onto another. But, then I'm freaking out if I put it on vibrate. I THINK I NEED AA FOR MY IPHONE 4 NOW. Damn you Frank for pointing this out. LOL

I am going to turn off the notifications to email, it's a huge time suck. I tried to triage my email once and people thought I was dead as I didn't respond almost immediately. I need to learn to manage their expectations but more importantly tell them that if it really is important then pick up the phone.

SarahArrow and then screen those calls too?

You definitely hit upon it Sarah - by our actions we setup certain expectations for those we are connected with. Managing, and especially challenging and changing those expectations can be a bit of a time suck - but if the changes help you in the end - they are really helping them as well.

I hope that makes some kind of sense LOL

Hi Frank,

I read Leo Babauta's book, The Power of Less, and his other ebook Focus, and I immediately started to do the things you are suggesting. This new way of working have switched the way I get things done. I get so much more done now, and I believe that I'm finally focusing on the right things, and not just getting everything done at once.

What really works for me is to have no more than three important tasks that I need to finish every single day. And that I finish the most important one first, and that I don't do anything else, before I finish the three tasks.

jens Two resources that I RALLY need to digest - thanks for the reminder my friend.

Finding ways to be productive and less distracted is almost always a personal journey - what works for us - is well, what works.

So glad to hear that you are finding those ways!

I think writers who blog struggle more than writers in general. Bloggers are, almost by definition, preoccupied with social media. It's impossible to escape since it is so foundational to how we do business! I can completely relate to your list (in fact, I found it when I should have been writing my next post!)

Ruth - The Freelance Writing Blog LOL - sorry for being a distraction - but really glad if it was helpful.

Yeah - we bloggers are a "plugged in" lot for sure. Finding ways to quiet the noise has always been a journey for me.

Boy, can I relate to this, Frank. I think of your four killers, #1 is my biggest challenge. As a self-identified introvert, I cannot be multi-tasking while I write my post. I need to dive into those deep waters and stay there until I am finished. I write all my posts in a word processing program, then copy and paste into my blog. So, no Internet until it's completed.

Another concentration killer of mine: As a 100% random creative, I think that would be all the ideas I get for new posts while I'm writing a current one. They bounce all over the place and distract me from the task at hand. In a way, that's good because I always have a list of fresh topics, but all those "what if's" can take away my focus. : )

JudyDunn I have a friend that encounters that same problem when she writes - all the ideas for other posts - she keeps a voice recorder near her - hits one button and records the idea and then keeps on writing the piece at hand.

Dunno - might work?

Thanks my friend for stopping by and adding insight - these killers can be, well, killers!
