How's my blogging bannerWhat goes into writing and promoting a blog post? Did you ever stop to think that each post has an additional 42 steps to it?

No?

Neither did I until I started listing them in this post :)

Pre-post writing and research checks….

□   Keyword research

□   Select your keyword

□   What’s your angle?

□  Are you adding anything new or fresh to the story?

□   Spell check and review for grammar

□   Add an image with keyword in alt tag

□   Check all links to make sure they work

□   Write the SEO title – this is the title search engines see and it the title that is pulled through to Facebook, it may be different to your post headline.

□   Write SEO description (description tag with keyword) This is the description that gets pulled through to Facebook, G+ and other sites. Add a call to action in this section to encourage readers to click through.

□   Set featured image if your theme is Genesis, or any other theme that needs featured images in its layout

□   Tick appropriate category box, that’s one or two not twenty

□   Comment in forums with related topics and have a link to the post in your signature

□   Answers related comments in Q&A sites with link to post – Yes, even Quora has it’s uses

□   Answer the comments on your post, in a timely fashion or Bob gets mad ;)

I’ve published and promoted my post, what’s next?

 □   Record yourself speaking the post and distribute on podcasting sites like blogtalkradio.com

□   Create slides with key points and share on Slideshare or Slide Rocket

□   Record yourself talking about each point on your slides, using the article as script. Convert to video and distribute on video distribution sites (e.g., YouTube and Vimeo)

□   Convert the article to a pdf and distribute on pdf distribution sites.

□   Keep it in a file for inclusion in a future report or ebook. Yep, you knew you could use Antholgize one day ;)

Thank you Sarah for this helpful list. I learned a lot especially about using Tumblr, Posterous, Stumbleupon, Delicious, Digg- none of which I ever have used. Now I just have to learn about these places.

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@Clarksearch careful with StumbleUpon, you could be there a long time :) it’s addictive. Posterous is great for building links back to your posts. Graham Hunt has a post on how to do this somewhere.

  • grahunt

Now if Icould only find where it was!

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@grahunt you can’t have lost a post like that! have you tried Googling it? ;)

      • grahunt

        @SarahArrow
Not yet Sarah. Been a bit busy this evening

        • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@grahunt Yep, that was the one. You may go back to organising your revolution now Citizen Hunt ;)

  • Clarksearch

Ok thanks again. Been blogging for a year and a half now and there is still so much to learn. I only started using images a few months ago. LOL

Nice list Sarah, I know somewhere in the 42 points you did make time for a quick nap but it couldn’t be much :) .

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@annelizhannan I should have added a glass of wine in there as well ;)

  • http://www.RyanHanley.com/ Ryan Hanley

     @SarahArrow …

I’ve never heard of BlogTalkRadio.com and I never thought of doing a Blog Post Audio… Brilliant.

I’m looking into this right now!

    Ryan H.

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@Ryan Hanley great :) post a link up to your show when you have one up and running. I bet you’ll be fab on audio.

      • http://www.RyanHanley.com/ Ryan Hanley

@SarahArrow Dude… I’m very, very heavily considering taking on a Podcast… It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

        • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@Ryan Hanley it will be awesome. Go do it :)

  • http://online-english-lessons.eu/wordpress/ Angela Boothroyd

So much to do! PDF distribution sites is one I haven’t thought of before  and I think that could be very useful. Time for some research I think.

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@Angela Boothroyd Scribd is good, and I bet that verb-y pdf would convert into a super slide deck :)

  • grahunt

Not yet Sarah. Been a bit busy this evening @SarahArrow

  • http://www.smallbusinesstraining.co.uk/ Linda Mattacks

Glad I hadn’t a clue about this checklist when I started out – it would have seemed so mammoth I’d probably never have got off the starting block! :-(

Mind you, a load of the stuff you mention here wasn’t easily doable back in those Dark Ages was it? ;-)

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@Linda Mattacks time to crawl out of the cave Linda ;) A lot of things listed people do instinctively like add images, check the keywords, list resources etc.

  • SuzeStMaurWrites

Great advice as usual, Sarah. One thing I would stress, and this is amusing coming from a writer, huh – is don’t just slap up any image on your blog post; take some trouble over it. Online comms are moving away from text only to text-plus-visuals and even visuals-led (e.g. Infographics, Pinterest) and I have a feeling that good, strong images are becoming an increasingly important plus point in blog posts generally.

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@SuzeStMaurWrites I love the image in this post, it’s so me, and yet so relevant to the post. I may have to get in touch and ask if I can have it made into mugs…

  • http://www.assessment4potential.com/blog LynnTulip

I am learning all the time – Livefyre – tick, headlines – tick and now anthrologize….

    I love your tips.

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@LynnTulip have you not tried it already? A few ebooks to go with your traditional books?

      • http://www.assessment4potential.com/blog LynnTulip

@SarahArrow I just ‘did’ an e-book – well pdf. Now what?!?!

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@Andrea T.H.W. Yes, he likes us to answer our comments in a timely fashion :) I’ll admit to trying harder since he said that :)

  • http://primefit.org/ Mary C. Weaver, CSCS

Oh my gosh—this is a fabulous list. Daunting as hell, yes—but fabulous.

I especially like this tip: “Record yourself speaking the post and distribute on podcasting sites like blogtalkradio.com.”

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@Mary C. Weaver, CSCS I bet you have some fabulous podcasts just waiting to happen, and as you are the only sane person in your niche you’ll be brilliant

@SarahArrow Have I told you lately that I love you? :-) Thanks for the encouragement—and for recognizing my superpower!

           @Mary C. Weaver, CSCS You’re welcome :)

  • Sarah Payne

    Hey Sarah,

This is a good checklist! It’s amazing how much goes into each any every article. I’ll be honest—I don’t do all of this, but I probably should.

Thanks for posting this. I’m going to bookmark it for later reference! :)

    Sarah

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@Sarah Payne Hi Sarah, it’s amazing how much we do on autopilot and what we need reminding about. Thanks for the comment :)

  • http://www.wmwebdesign.co.uk/ wmwebdes

    Hi Sarah
I have a check list before I publish, but yours puts me to shame.

I have recently added the After publication section and included… fill in your SEO meta info.
Same if you use built in SEO or an SEO plugin.

Fabulous checklist – might print this one off.

    • http://www.saraharrow.co.uk/ SarahArrow

@wmwebdes I was thinking of creating it as a PDF and giving it away. I get a little crazy with my checklists :)
