1000 Words and More

Last week we talked about grammar. We rambled on for about 900 words and had an amazing discussion in the comments. I love coming back again and again to this community because of your insights and the conversations you bring to what we write. Since we focused a LOT on words last week, let’s focus on something a little bit different this week: pictures.

man holding a picture

A picture is worth a thousand words, so at this point in the post, I’ve written 1,075 words and counting. That seems excessive, so I’m going to open up the floor to you, the For Bloggers, By Bloggers community, so we can discuss this further. I’m really hoping Danny Brown chimes in because he knows how to use pictures almost better than any blogger I know.

Pay attention, though, because this isn’t going to be just a free-for-all on any topic you want to talk about regarding pictures. I’ve got some questions and I’d like us to take a stab at them together and see what we can learn from each other. Choose one (or more) of these to answer in your comment. Say which number you’re answering and let’s get some sort of discussion started on the proper use of pictures in blogs.

Questions

  1. What blogs that you read really use pictures effectively? Why do you think that is?
  2. What do you think of picture only blogs and/or blogs that do a “Wordless Wednesday“?
  3. Which industry blogs are more suited for pictures? Is there a specific industry better suited or does it depend on the topic being discussed?
  4. How many pictures is too many? Does it depend on the length of the post?
  5. Is it better to notice the pictures in blogs or for them to seamlessly sink into the background context of the post itself?
  6. What do you think of blogs that never use pictures? Do you notice?

Alright, here’s where the conversation starts and we all shine together through each other’s knowledge. Let’s see what you have to say.

Thoughts?

I'll tackle number three. I think it's hard to find images for information technology blogs. I think the writers of such blogs must agree because their posts rarely use images, or they use the same image over and over again. I try to be more creative with the images I use on my blog. I like the image to relate to what I'm saying, but I want it to add some value to the written word. I sometimes add a snarky comment to the image, too, so it behooves readers to pay attention to the images I use in my posts. You just never know what I might say...

Erin F. I like your thoughts and your personal approach. I would agree that some industries (especially info tech ones) don't easily lend themselves to pictures. I like to hear that you try to think out of the box and find engaging pictures that bring in your audience though.

Great comment, Thanks!

What do you think about photo size & layout? I've been advised to make my photos larger (content pgs, not landing pg). I'd love your thoughts. www.simplystaugustine.com

joey_strawn 362 pts moderator

gracefullmom Photo size doesn't bother me too much very often unless it's so small I have to squint or so large it takes up the whole screen. I usually stick with a medium-sized image (350-550 pixels high) and try to make them horizontal in layout (usually 500-600 pixels wide fills up a good standard blog column, but play around with yours to make sure they fit perfectly).

Hey there mate,

As you know, I'm a HUGE fan of images in a post - especially ones that cover the content area prior to the copy, as opposed to being right or left aligned.

To me, you have a split second to grab someone's attention when they land on your post - and hile you might have the most amazing copy in the content, I've yet to see a bunch of words that look sexy when you open a browser window. ;-)

An image, though? That can make you stop, inspire a feeling of "Holy shit!" and more, if it's the right image. Get that reaction, and the reader is then (usually) hooked to read the rest of the post.

I'm also a big fan of using more abstract images, as opposed to ones that are obvious for the content. If I see another stock image of a faceless morphing clay model with a flowchart to accompany a stats post, I'll scream! Why not use a collage of galaxies and people to suggest numbers? Or a school of fish?

Be creative with the image - it can still tie into the post, without the easy choice of stock images that bore the reader to death.

Good stuff, sir. :)

I love pictures in blogs, but I have come across metaphysical discussions where the 'hoaky' or 'universe & stars' pics that everyone uses are distracting. Mathematical & science blogs too are wonderful with simple formatting, paragraph separations & formulas. I don't need to see a scientist scratching his grad to 'tell' me the written piece has thought provoking reading material. Let me figure that out for myself. As for social media & tech blogs, I am highly biased and gravitate (salivate) whenever I see an infographic

I'm definitely a word person but too many can be intimidating. I like a blog with lots of white space and pictures, videos, etc to break it up. Food blogs especially need really good mouth-watering images. I've never seen a 'wordless Wednesday' blog. Do you have any links? Would love to check them out.

Shelley Pringle I'm with you! There are a lot of blogs that do them, but one I know is run by a friend of mine named Meredith. Check our her stuff here: http://www.ordinarymer.com/

joey_strawn I really like Meredith's blog, including the look of it. The 'wordless Wednesday' is intriguing. I'm going to think about doing that on my blog.

Shelley Pringlejoey_strawn I don't know if this is happening this year, but last year, the American Diabetes Association provided an outline for bloggers for the entire month of November. One of the weekly posts was a wordless one. The two I remember vividly were posts asking for a photo of why you manage your diabetes and another one asking for a photo of what you think of when you hear the word "diabetes." I didn't participate in the diabetes-themed blogging this year, but I'm sure the ADA has links to bloggers who are.

Marya | Writing HappinessSarahArrowjoey_strawn Hi Sarah,

I'm wondering if the trick to a good picture is that you don't actually notice it? As in, it doesn't detract from the post - you're aware of it, as opposed to "beware"? :)

I love pictures even though I consistently get feedback it causes a site to load slower. Using pictures is a excellent way to complement a story, adds a new dimension, can help communicate a story more effectively and evoke feelings at a deeper level. I am a great believe if you have something to say that is worthwhile and helpful people will wait for the extra few seconds. ;-)

joey_strawn 362 pts moderator

Grit08 I agree. The extra milliseconds it takes to load one picture along with a post is never really a large deterrent for me. I agree with your thoughts completely. Thanks for commenting!

Grit08 You could use something like Minify or MaxCDN to improve load time, especially when it comes to image script. :)
